5 Fun Ways to Use Child Maracas at Home

Little hands love to shake, tap, and move to music. Child-sized maracas give young musicians a simple way to explore beat, rhythm, listening, and movement through play.
You don't need a formal music lesson to get started. Try these five playful activities at home and let your child experience music with their whole body.

1. Find the Beat
Put on a favorite Let’s Play Music song and invite your child to shake the maracas along with the steady beat.
Encourage them to march, tap their knees, or move their whole body as they play. Feeling the beat through movement helps make music something they can experience, not just hear.
2. Fast and Slow
Start by shaking slowly, then switch to a faster pace.
"Slow... slow... FAST!" Shaking on the beat, then shaking 2x per beat (or double time) will give a sense of slow-fast and will help your child subdivide the beat.
This gives your child a playful way to explore subdivision while listening and coordinating their movements with the music.
3. Play, Then Freeze
Let your child shake and move while the music plays. When the music stops, their maracas stop too!
Start the music again and keep going. This simple game encourages careful listening and helps children practice controlling their movements.
4. Echo My Rhythm
Create a short rhythm pattern with your maracas and invite your child to copy you.
Shake-shake, pause.
Then let your child create a pattern for you to echo. This back-and-forth practice builds listening, memory, and rhythmic imitation.
5. Shake the Syllables
Connect music and language by shaking the maracas for each syllable in a word.
Cat = 1 shake
Apple = 2 shakes
Elephant = 3 shakes
Try family names, favorite animals, or foods your child loves. It's a simple way to explore rhythm while listening to the sounds in words.

Make Music Together
Maracas don't have to be complicated to be musical. A few minutes of singing, moving, listening, and playing can help your child build the musical skills they use throughout their Let’s Play Music journey.
So grab the maracas, turn on a favorite song, and have fun making music together!
