Building Chord Confidence with Camptown Races: A Fun Folk Song for Piano Students
Updated: Feb 18
We believe that music is best learned through joyful, familiar experiences—and Camptown Races delivers just that. This beloved American folk song is an iconic favorite, making it an ideal addition to your repertoire collection.
With its simple melody and infectious rhythm, Camptown Races is perfect for reinforcing a steady beat while keeping students engaged and confident at the piano. Because the tune is already familiar, students can focus on developing foundational skills rather than decoding new musical material.
For this freebie, we’ve created two thoughtfully designed versions of Camptown Races:
One using A Major triads in root position
One using A Major triads in cadence position
These variations give students a hands-on way to review chord roots and experience how harmony functions within a musical context—exactly the kind of learning we value.
This piece is especially well suited for a Level 2A student, offering a gentle introduction to chord work while still feeling like “real music.” It’s an easy win for building confidence, reinforcing theory concepts, and encouraging musicality from the very beginning.
Teacher Tip:
Be sure to download, print, and make copies for your studio. Camptown Races works beautifully as a quick review piece, a supplemental assignment, or a fun performance option.

When kids first start changing chords, their fingers can feel all clumsy like a ragdollhit simulation. Using familiar tunes like Camptown Races really helps smooth out the learning curve and keeps practice engaging.
