Why Classical Music Matters for Kids

ree

When you think of classical music, you might picture a fancy concert hall or grown-ups in tuxedos. But the truth is, classical music has something powerful for everyone—even your little ones!

In his TED Talk, conductor Benjamin Zander says, It’s not that only a few people like classical music, it’s that most people just haven’t discovered they like it yet.” And that’s exactly why we bring it into every Let’s Play Music class.

How We Use Classical Music in Let's Play Music Class

Each semester, our albums include 2–3 fully orchestrated classical pieces, recorded by professional orchestras like The London Symphony Orchestra.

But here’s the secret: we choose pieces that are fun, engaging, and easy for kids to follow. With clear melodies and exciting sounds, children quickly learn to recognize themes, instruments, and even emotions in the music.

Here’s how it looks in each of our programs:

Sound Beginnings—Children explore classical music through Smart Moves, with loosely choreographed dance activities that bring the music to life.

Let’s Play Music—Classical pieces become interactive Puppet Shows, where each melodic theme is given a character. Kids listen for themes to return or change, building memory and listening skills.

Presto—Older students take a deeper dive with Time Travel segments, learning about the era in which each piece was composed, plus the history, art, science, and culture of that time.

Why It Works

Classical music helps kids in so many ways:

👂 Build focus and listening skills

🧩 Strengthen memory and pattern recognition

💕 Feel big emotions and express them

🌟 Spark imagination and creativity

Even more importantly, classical music becomes a shared experience. Kids laugh when a silly theme comes back, gasp when the music gets big and dramatic, and beam with pride when they can identify “their” song.

Bringing It Home

The best part? You don’t have to be a music expert to share classical music with your child at home. You can try doing any of the following activities:

  • Playing a short piece during snack time or in the car 🚗

  • Asking, “What do you think the music sounds like?” 🐦🚂🌧️

  • Dancing around the living room to a favorite melody 💃

You’ll be surprised by how quickly your child connects with the music—sometimes even humming along without realizing it!

At Let’s Play Music, we believe classical music isn’t just for grown-ups—it’s a gift your child can carry for life. By giving them playful, age-appropriate introductions now, you’re opening the door to a lifelong love of music.
