Behind the Music: How We Create Music for Let’s Play Music Classes

At Let’s Play Music, we believe children deserve music that is not only fun to listen to, but thoughtfully created with their learning in mind.

That’s why we pour so much intention, care, and creativity into every one of our 21 albums and 400+ songs. Our music isn't simply added to the curriculum after it is created. It is designed to support the musical concepts, movement activities, stories, and experiences children encounter in class.

So, what does it take to turn a simple musical idea into the energetic, engaging songs our students love? Here’s a peek behind the music!

It Starts With an Intention

We don’t choose songs at random. Every piece of music has a purpose.

When selecting or developing music, we consider how it can support the overall learning experience. We look for songs or write songs that support our curriculum goals such as:

• Lyrics teaching music theory concepts and skills

• Active, physical games

• Emotional and social exploration

• Classical music pieces

• Variety of cultural representation

• Instrument play

• Family and generational bonding

  
  

We think about more than whether a song sounds good. We consider how children will move to it, sing it, play along with it, and experience it in class.

Bringing the Music to Life

Once we have our selections, they head into professional music production with Jess Soelberg Productions.

Jess helps determine the right feel, instrumentation, arrangement, and overall style for each track. The goal is to create music that is engaging and enjoyable while still serving its purpose within the curriculum.

A song used for a movement activity may need a completely different energy than one designed for listening, singing, or instrument play.

Every musical choice helps create the experience we want children to have.

Creating a Musical Journey

An album isn't simply a collection of songs. We carefully consider how the tracks work together as a whole.

We balance fast and slow tempos, energetic and calming moments, and different types of musical experiences to create an engaging flow from beginning to end.

We also consider how each arrangement connects with the activities children will do alongside the music. A song might inspire movement, encourage instrument exploration, reinforce a musical concept, or bring a story to life.

The result is music that feels natural and playful for children while intentionally supporting their musical development.

Recording Familiar Voices

One of the things that makes our music especially meaningful is the people behind the voices.

When you listen closely, you may recognize some familiar voices! Our recordings feature office team members, talented parents, students, and even Let’s Play Music graduates.

Using real voices from our community gives our music a warm, authentic quality. It also reflects something we value deeply at Let’s Play Music: music is meant to be shared.

Children don't need a perfectly polished performance to experience the joy of making music. They need opportunities to sing, move, play, listen, and participate.

From the Studio to Your Family

Once the music has been recorded, mixed, and mastered, there is still one more part of the process: bringing the album to life visually and making it accessible to families.

Our graphic designer creates a custom album cover that reflects the theme and personality of the music. Then, the completed album is uploaded directly to our app so families can easily access the songs when classes begin.

That means the music children experience in class can also become part of their musical world at home.

The albums can also be downloaded from our Digital Library as .mP3 files to be played from any device.
